Men’s Grooming Essentials Wishlist
“If you make your bed every morning, you will have accomplished the first task of the day” – U.S. Navy Adm. William H. McCraven
I’ve been giving a lot of thought to that quote recently and as a result I’ve been trying to adjust my morning routine to help get my day off to the best possible start. I’ve made some progress – by deciding what I’ll wear the night before and prepping my lunch meals at the start of the week I’ve managed to remove unnecessary angst about getting up in the morning.
One area that I still need to get to grips with is my daily grooming / skin care routine – which Daily Moisturiser, Face Wash, Eye Serum, Men’s Trimmer and Toothbrush should I be using? With the help of some of my favourite publications and the insights of some of my favourite men’s lifestyle bloggers I’ve managed to put together a list of grooming products I’m keen to try out.
Gentlemen’s Tonic Moisturiser
If you read the A/W Essentials post from a few weeks ago then you’ll recognise the ‘Power Packed Nourishing Moisturiser’ from Gentlemen’s Tonic. Recommended by John from The Everyday Man it’s described as a dual action, deeply nourishing and firming moisturiser that helps protect against dehydration.
At £89 for 100ml it’s definitely not cheap but if John gives it his seal of approval then it’s more than likely worth a try.

Aesop Fabulous Face Cleanser
It’s no secret that I’m a big fan of Aesop. Like many others, I was originally seduced by the Australian company’s branding and superb shop fit-outs but it’s their product that has been the real driving force of my love affair with Aesop.
This particular face cleanser is meant for skin that is a little sensitive and promises to give a deep-feeling clean without stripping your skin. Ideal if like me you’re prone to occasional dryness or sensitivity.

Baxter of California Facial Scrub
Baxter of California have been providing grooming products for generations of gentlemen for the last 50 years so they have to be worth checking out, right? Hey Gents listed it in their ‘Best Skin Care Products For Men’ so my mind is made up.
The ‘Facial Scrub’ is a mild facial exfoliant that gently buffs away impurities and dead surface cells as it stimulates skin renewal. Said to effectively tone, exfoliate and promote cell renewal as well as improving smoothness this product seems like a winner.

Kiehl’s Age Defender Eye Serum
Call it youthful ignorance but I’ve never been one to worry much about my skin and the effects countless late nights and early mornings may have on it. But just as my metabolism has begun to slow down as I near the end of my twenties, so too has my skin started to show minor signs of ageing – most noticeably the area under my eyes.
The age defender eye serum from Kiehl’s was recommended to me by Sam Squire. It is suggested that the eye serum helps to visibly correct ageing skin around the eye by firming sagging, reducing the appearance of dark circles to produce a smoother, more youthful appearance.

Panasonic Beard Trimmer
It’s been years since I last sported the clean shaved look so a beard trimmer is an absolute essential for me. I’ve tested quite a few over the years but have yet to find an all-in-one solution that allows me to easily fade by beard, trim those tricky areas around the moustache and also tidy up my sideburns and neckline.
The Panasonic GB80 Multi Groomer may be the answer. A 45 degree angled blade aims to offer the most precise cutting, while a built in detail trimmer and comb attachments combine to target each area mentioned above. The fact that it’s fully washable is an added bonus.

Sans [ceuticals] Lip Aid
Chapped lips are like a headache or toothache – they’re impossible to take your mind off. A few years ago I split my lip playing football and each time my lips get dry it threatens to open up. As we move into the colder months I’m looking to take extra care and avoid any unnecessary lip dryness.
The skin is our largest organ and absorbs 70 percent of what is applied to its surface. It is that fact that acts as a foundation for the formulations created by New Zealand based Sans [ceuticals]. Their lip aid includes papaya enzymes that gently remove dead skin cells to keep lips soft and smooth. It’s carrot and calendula oils also help nourish and heal damaged lips.

Oral B Genius 9000
I started looking into this electric toothbrush after a conversation with Anthony Lee of The Alps Blog. He told me about an Oral B app that monitored your teeth cleaning, guides you through the process and ensuring that you spend an ample amount of time on each area of the mouth. In short, it improves your cleaning routine.
The Oral B Genius features bluetooth technology that allows it to connect with Oral B’s app on your phone or tablet. It’s like having a dentist in your home and I can’t wait to try it out.

Le Labo Santal 33
Fragrances are something that I’ve never really bought for myself but rather been given as gifts for Christmas or Birthdays. As such, I’ve historically worn the same scent for most of the year. However, I’ve recently been wanting to change that up and start to treat the humble fragrance as part of my outfit – something considered.
Le Labo Santal 33 is an iconic scent and one that I’ve been seeing a lot on Instagram recently. Described as a timeless and transcendent depiction of the American West, it fuses rich smoky wood alloy, spices and leather with sweeter notes of iris and violet to create an addictive unisex scent that is both comforting and unforgettable. I picked up a sample a few weeks ago and I’ve decided to bite the bullet and place an order.
